Stephanie Scott & the Moulin Rouge! But....not exclusive. 😉

Stephanie Scott is an abstract, geometric, oil painter from Seattle, Washington. She began painting in landscape and the figurative and did a residency in Italy.  It ended up as a life-changing moment when her idol/teacher told her she had no eye for line, color, or composition. It was difficult to hear as a young, impressionable painter, but instead of quitting, she took the criticism to heart and did something about it.

She moved forward and studied transcriptions to learn. (In art, to transcribe is to copy or record information in a different form than the original. To transcribe a painting or drawing is not to copy the artwork exactly, but instead to record observations in a different form. A transcription also doesn’t need to copy everything in an original.) Stephanie studied at the Gage Academy of art in Seattle also learning color theory for painters and many other classes.

Once she developed her color theory, she went back to Italy and did better but she fell in love with the practice studies she did in her color theory classes.

Stephanie now uses geometry and color theory to create geometric designs in her work. And….her sharp lines are all by hand, in oil paint! No rulers, no T-squares, just free-form drawn, crisp, perfect lines! Her work is mesmerizing to look at and for us fiber artists, we see quilt blocks in her work. Speaking of that, she’d LOVE to collaborate with some quilt and fiber artists! Please DM her if you’re interested! https://www.instagram.com/stephaniescott.art/?hl=en

Stephanie does a wonderful podcast about art business, art theory and mind sense called Brush Work. You can also listen to it HERE!

Moulin Rouge!

My day was filled with creating a skyline at the bottom of my panel. I’m going to have iconic pieces that existed in the 1900 Paris skyline. It will emphasize the scope of the panel showing the green fairy high up into the night sky, flirting withe the moon. I choose architectural masterpieces such as the Eiffel Tower, the Ferris Wheel from the 1900  Exposition Universelle world exhibition at Paris, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, and of course, the Moulin Rouge! A place where absinthe flowed like water. The Moulin Rouge is still going strong today and you can see shows, have dinner and a drink!

Today I began creating the iconic windmill of the Moulin Rouge. It is the most colorful of the buildings with it’s red/gold sails. It was actually a working windmill back in the day. I used gold & red thread yarns and crocheted beads along the borders. There is still much work to be done on it, but it’s coming together.
