OMG The Tapestry!! Today I got to be a part of history. It was something very special!
Vatnsdæla á refliis is a tapestry that is communally embroidered to the the Saga of the People of Vatnsdalur. Work on the tapestry began in 2011. The final length will be 46 meters. Currently it is at 30 meters. It will take another four years to complete it. Then, I believe it will be housed in a special area of the University of Iceland, but I’m not 100% sure if I have the correct University.
I chose to work on a Raven. I love Ravens and crows. I have a crow family that lives in my backyard that I’m friends with. I feed them peanuts, cat food and left-over chicken wings. lol. I love how across the world, ravens & crows always have some special meaning in the local culture and history. In Icelandic culture, they represent death and that someone will be killed. So maybe not the best representation but either way, I love that I got to do a raven!
My roomy Kattrin and I went together, which was fun. It was my first time doing embroidery. I think I’ll stick to crochet, but it was wonderful learning to embroider from an expert! The woman who owns and began the tapestry was my teacher. I believe this Saga is about her ancestry. She still lives in the Vatnsdalur area. It truly was something to behold!

Wow all of that is just so cool, looks like it is fun but a lot of work too.
Hi!
Yes, that is 11 years worth of work so far by many, many people. It’s truly amazing to see in person.
Hiya Stacy,
Thanks so much for sending me the blog and the great photos of your art projects in Iceland. Your art residency sounds wonderful! How did you find out about it? How long are you going to be in Iceland? Hope to see you when you return. Give my regards to Louis too.
All the best, Lorraine.
Hi!
My residency is until the end of the month. The 1st week of September, Louis and a few other family members will be joining me in the capital for sight-seeing and fun. I discovered the residency through the guild! Someone had posted about it and I applied. I know of at least one other guild member who has come here. I highly recommend it!
I’m very proud of you, and glad you have not just visited to work but to engage with the community. You are someone special and talented.
Thank you sweetie!
Your raven looks great completed! Katherine
Thanks! I really enjoyed working on it.
